    I definitely love the cranky old man takes on Earthbound. There are more Earthbound ripoff games than people who have actually played Earthbound at this point! And you know what? Earthbound sucks. So there! I'm genuinely shocked to see typical VX trash in this game: having to click "fight" and "execute", spamming attack, etc. I'd like to see how well they'd do if their game wasn't such a ripoff. Like, c'mon this sprite looks so much like Nes or whatever. Me playing a game for more than an hour: hey now, I'm almost done with Fallout 1. I'm just drip-feeding the gameplay vids to hell, lol. I've also completed 9 games so far this year. Would be more but I've been grinding D4 like a jabroni. I know I'm a meme at this point, I just get defensive 😅 On virtue signaling: I guess I find this more interesting than just making FF ripoff number 8 billion. That being said, this content warning makes it sounds like a lot of STUFF is gonna happen in the game. Holy crap. When do we get to the s** tourismmmmm? 😩

    Hello, I really enjoyed this stream and watched nearly the whole thing. I'm getting into game development and am looking to decide on a game engine. I definitely lean more towards art than programming, so I want to use a simple engine. Even with it's limitations, RPG maker will definitely work for me, but I've noticed a problem. I can't find one single RPG maker game that visually looks good. Or fresh, or clean. Am I mis-seeing reality or is there something about the engine that cannot produce a game with as good graphics as all the other engines? Would appreciate illumination on this concern of mine. EDIT: I just saw your project at 1:28:53, btw, it actually looks good., but when it's exported, will it still look as clean and fresh?

      You'd need to define what "fresh and clean" is. There are a number of games - even popular ones - that have had original art made for them, such as Lisa the Painful, Omori, Symphony of War, and In Stars and Time.

    This digital circus game gives me some “first game” vibes. SOME of the presentation works, but they forgot the gameplay. True to RPG maker form. Shamelessly ripping off your current favorite thing is also a rookie move. “Woootbm hates everything.” I can’t really argue against that. My perspective is that I have the luxury of time for this hobby to try a lot of things. We live in an age of oversaturation, so a lot of people don’t have as much time. I think it’s important to uplift the truly outstanding stuff. Which unfortunately means everything else is “mid.” I like a lot of things about this Japanamo game. The sword animations are really cool, for one. But yeah, I predict this isn’t interesting past like 3 hours of gameplay 😅

    I love this Clocks game. It has that classic “so bad it’s good” vibe like The Room: a weird mishmash of a actual effort with completely bizarre choices. Even the title sounds like a parody. Perfect. So your ideas about saving are now mirroring mine, almost? I used yanfly’s autosave plugin and then just removed the save button from the save screen. The save button in my menu is simply an event that calls the autosave function. The main issue is that the plugin requires the player to make a save first to work. I worked with the forums to create a script that does this automatically. Why do people try so hard to copy old games? It’s so uncreative. How is this a fun project to work on? I don’t understand people who don’t feel the overwhelming urge to do their own thing when given such a tool. At least with RTP garbage I know they do it because they’re lazy.

      @@isittrash so the idea was that you can have multiple save slots, but you can't save scum. So I handle this (also) through a script. The one save system is 2 scripts: one will initialize the save. It will check if there is an open save slot and if so write a new save. Two, the main save function, will ovewrite the currently active save slot whenever the autosave common event is called. The problem, as discussed in stream, is that using a script call to save like this on the map causes problems. I suppose I could just give up having multiple save slots available... I don't know. I'll have to figure this out after the test. Everyone else will just have to deal with my janky save method in the mean time.

      I appreciate the suggestion, but I just think games are the sum of their parts; I don't see much purpose to grading each individual part like that. I do like Orc's simplified "Is it fun?" benchmark. I may do that with 3 steps; "Yes" "Maybe, but not for me." and "No" - So like EXCALIBURIAN would it that maybe category.

    Qaplah! I do agree a first game should be small but this is like barely a prototype. I have seen devs who just seem to constantly make these micro games. Not sure the point but I guess it feels good to be able to say “I’ve made 10 games!” Even though it’s a cumulative of like 1 hour of gameplay. Is this Zelda game also a prototype? They forgot the enemies! Uhhhh marble game? Well I forgot what else I had to say. Bye!

    Good games. Amazing. WSAD: do I say this? Now I'm gonna be paranoid and always listen to myself. Evil Plays Dice: oh, hey, PVGames assets. It looks like he stuck with the older assets back when he exclusively worked with RPGMaker. Prelude for a Dream: I don't think I've seen a game that was 100% lore before. And the lore is just nonsense fluff, too. Put this one next to Ballad of Radolf somewhere. Raji: I like the setting and ideas, but the gameplay still gives me "indie game that's not quite there."

    I’m gonna be a narcissist here and talk about what I try to do to make an easy game more interesting (ie oni sellsword). I tried to make the enemies seem as threatening as possible, but I made everything the player can do OP (in ways other than straight damage). That way the player feels like there’s a chance they can lose even though they can pretty much always make a comeback. It also helps when enemies do more than basic attack 😂

Every game that copies souls focuses on the masochism but doesn’t give the player OP nonsense they can do. Where’s the fun in that? This weeb game has way too much story. Is this normal for a cozy game? I gotta be a jerk here and say cozy games are for girls. My wife loves them 😂 EDIT: Oh, I forgot. Game suggestions. I've been thinking about trudging through the "in development" on the forums because those people need more players. But I'm afraid to hurt people's feelings. Like ATT Turan has a game.     Repost because last one was invisible! At Week's End: - Is this more rogue-like than rogue-LITE? If so, I have no idea how the player is supposed to numbers hard enough to win. There's no skill in JRPG combat, there is only grind. I didn't see enough opportunity to get juiced up. - Definitely good effort in making something that LOOKS like a game, though. "A" for effort there, but the actual game design is too minimalist Just chatting - the dating app's are getting worse. The last time I used one (OkC), it would be like "Oh man 30 girls looked at your profile! Better subscribe!" But then once subscribed they eventually seemed to run out. So I canceled the sub to use the free version. Suddenly, another 100 girls were looking at my profile. "Oh, man! Better resub!" It definitely felt like a scam via dubious algorithm programming. The app didn't used to do that, and this was years ago. So I can only assume the algorithm has been further BS'ed. Nightmare Cart - I don't think the tutorial told you how to heal. Aren't the aether vials for healing? WTH? - Still baffled by people being offended by AI generated content but not fan games. I thought people cared about *stealing from artists*? Hmmmm?

      RUclips is so weird. It never sent an alert that you reposted this, and when I checked comments with the (default) filter of "Comments I haven't responded to yet" your comment didn't show up. But once I removed that filter, it became visible. Anyways, hopefully At Week's End will improve with time. Dating apps are terrible. I wasn't even getting matches as a free user on Tinder. I will try some of the Japanese dating apps (it's actually how I met Lady last time)...but their price is nuts and there isn't really a free version (I mean, there is, but you can't message any matches you get, so what's the point?) Nightmare Kart; I don't mind fan games, though I do always have to wonder about what the point of all the effort is for. But I suppose, maybe this game wouldn't be getting as much coverage if it was just...broody Mario Kart. I guess it needed the Bloodborne-fan game tie in to catch people's attention.

    1:50:23 Technically speaking, MV *can* be a 64-bit app, since the 32-bit limitation for games is due to MV shipping with the 32-bit versions of NW.js. There are tutorials that show you how to replace these with the 64-bit versions (alongside updating to a newer version). This is fully automated in my RPG Maker Cook Tool Deluxe (picking the most suitable version for each engine). From various accounts (including mine) MV can be faster when switching over to a 64-bit executable. Also, the MV editor *is* limited to 2GB memory (for some reason) because it's not compiled with the memory extension flag turned on (which expands the limit to 4GB). I had to use an unofficial tool in order to raise the limit. Why didn't they enable it when they updated MV to have the news window? I have no idea, honestly. It's literary a switch in the project settings!

    Hey, it's a drunk Nolan stream everybody. Sounds like he needed it this time, sorry buddy. This sword car game is kinda like... a whole strategy of indie game dev. It's like the Goat Simulator approach: stupid gimmick that people buy for a laugh and give praise for what is basically 30 minutes of game at best. It's not a bad strategy, just not one of integrity. So The Lost (which is very hard to search because the name is too basic) hasn't had an update in like 2 years? Did he give up on it? Really not sure why this project is taking so long unless he's one of those guys that wants his game to be 70 hours or something. I had my own project that I made embarassingly little progress on for a long time before I gave up on it, so I know how this can happen.

    There's a couple clips in that Forever Home game that would make a good Short 😂 Other than that, I just keep thinking the protag's are stray animals because pet adoption places always use the phrase "Forever Home" in ads (as in, adopt them from their foster homes so they can have a forever home). For some reason Silent Kingdom is described as an "otome" story. Which is a surprise to me, unless it's also meant to have yuri appeal, because having the MC decide that running around wearing nothing but a sexy nightie seems like a dude wrote it.

    Damn, the one Ernest recommended was so RPG Maker it kinda hurt. Also I knew Alice was right about the dialogue in Silent Kingdom (which is not so silent cause these characters never shut up). Like goddamn, I nearly fell asleep. Was not expecting there to be actual combat, which is extra funny considering it's super generic. Boost.

      That was the point, I think I recommended it in midst of a conversation of games which look bad but are actually good. And I genuinely love Forever Home. It's not the most amazing game ever, but the fact that somebody poured so much passion into an zero budget RPGMaker project (no external assets made, all the work was in writing and combat) touches my heart. It's a 40 hr game, with a fully fleshed out story. Somebody put way too much work into it for how it looks.

    "Just send an email!" Pretty interesting advice. But I'd still want to know what the publisher offers/takes. It sounds like they're paying him to work on his game, so I kinda expect a high percentage. Like maybe even 100%. But not a bad trade to get paid if your game otherwise only sells like <100 copies. But I'd be curious to know if they offer QA, localization (only Japanese?), and marketing for a game. I was looking at publishers at one point and found a tiny one. Their policy was you pay THEM. And then they do ??? with your game. So that kinda scam makes it easy to see how some "publishers" make money off dinky RPG Maker games.

      So part of this couldn't be answered because he is under NDA, so only some aspects of his contract could be discussed. I would imagine it's a % cut, and there is likely a baseline with some variance depending on what was negotiated. I think most serious publishers (as Dangen sounds to be) probably consider the games they take on on a case-by-case basis. Some of these questions could have been answered, but whoops; we sort of got a bit off the rails. This just became drinking buddies chat time and less of an interview. Lessons to be learned if I want to do more of these in the future. He seemed interested in doing it again, so maybe we'll bring him back on with a more focused discussion.

      Hi! Sorry, those kinds of details are the stuff I can't talk about unelss they're made public by Dangen themselves. Also, these are just my experiences with Dangen. I wouldn't know what it's like working with other publishers. Best way to find out is to pitch a game and receive an offer ;) What I can say is: localization, yes, the demo is already available in Japanese. And for marketing, you can google Pry Into The Void and switch to the news tab and see all the articles written about Pry Into The Void (which has been awesome). The game is also publicly confirmed for Switch, PlayStation and Xbox. The game has entered the "top wishlisted" ranking table on SteamDB (which I would have only dreamed to get onto prior) so working with Dangen has been very good for the game.

    What an unexpectedly tight theme this turned out to be. Momodora: - I've actually played through and beat this game. It only takes like 5 hours to beat? - I would say this is more of a SoTN clone than Souls clone. Which is probably why I liked it enough to beat it. - I'd say it's a solid C or C+. Not exciting enough for me to want to try the newer one. Dumb Girl in a Sewer: - I checked this game out some time ago, I was very put off by the setting/lore (or lack thereof). - The itemization seems... interesting. Might be the saving grace of a jank game like this. But that's a leap of faith.

    We are blessed for Nolan has returned! I'm on my own break due to RL things and now I'm sick, hurray! Because of that, I'm gonna speedrun these comments: Yuppie Psycho - No. Ara Fell - - From what I understand this game was made in RPG Maker 2003, and then "ported" with Unity. Might just be a shell that runs the og game on an emulator like Doom's current version. Or it might actually be a remake in a *real* engine. Not sure. - Aaaand we have another one of these games where it feels like the dev is actively trying to make the game more boring. I can't believe the MC gets bodied and has to return to town to get yelled at like a jabroni. WHY structure a story like this? - Adrian looks like BotW Link!

    Mu ha ha, I applied! This Vampire Survivors clone is completely missing the UX and gamefeel marks of the original, which were the strongest points of it since it is such a simple game. I actually REALLY want to showcase Vampire Survivors because I think the game is ALL THE THINGS an RM dev should aspire to be! It's even like 80% stock assets, man. Also, the first level music of VS is JAMMIN'. It sucks you right in.

    Honestly, I've always thought the default assets (especially in MZ) look pretty good, it's just that I've yet to play higher quality games made with them. I thought the sample project for VX Ace: "Crysalis" was also pretty good. People have little imagination but I can imagine an engine that aims more for a 'hobbyist' creation system rather than profit. So in turn we get these really aesthetically pleasing default assets in 3d and we can just create complex storylines and environments very easily. I think something like that would sell really well. So far RPG Architect seems pretty promising

    I suggest the Windsilver dev consider using that project as a learning opportunity and not sell it. The default assets, bad graphic design choices, stale battle system, and dialogue all show this is probably a first-time project. We all find out the hard way that sometimes we need to scrap our first projects and start fresh instead of pre-maturely throwing them on Steam with intent to sell. Edit: I just saw the segment that the dev was harassed. That is unfortunate. I didn't mean harassment here, just some tough truth that RPG Maker devs usually need to hear and if they keep going they can really develop a great bag of tools to carry over to a new project.

    Wow what a great game and a great video! Positivity! So I think I know why pressing D is skipping a turn because Tony stumbled on this in my own game. I think it's a default function of either Yanfly core or olivia octopath combat that you can "cycle" through characters by pressing left and right. But if you press right on the last character your turn just ends. It's stupid and should be turned off. This should only be in a combat system where you're allowed to pick the turn order of your team and go in any order. The combat being so easy makes the bad chest rewards even worse because even if better equipment (or other meaningful upgrades) were in there you wouldn't need them. You don't need levels, consumables, or money either so it's all pointless. Just speed run the game.

    I got pretty bogged down by the dialogue every time I picked something up, too. I wish they were shorter or at least built more characterization.

    As someone just coming to RPG Maker in 2024, I found this very informative. I think one of the main problems is as RPGMaker gives you a basically functional game out of the box, a lot of people just seem to cludge their own ideas into it and then say "good enough". The bar to getting a complete game off the ground is very, very low. And to be fair, as you pointed out, removing "RPGmaker" stuff is often harder than just adding new stuff. I have seen some incredibly polished games made in MV/MZ that (had I not known in advance) I would have easily believed were made in Godot or Unity. At the end of the day: go the extra mile, do the extra "thing" and maybe, possibly when you release it people wont hate it. lol

    Thank you for doing this video, saw the link on Reddit. Now I feel that you're the person to start a TEFL course review channel 😊I feel all of the online providers do similar tricks. The sales trick is for sure on every provider I've seen and being unable to skip through things, I guess it's their way of ensuring you are taking the full 120 hours? At least the completion certificate shows that you were able to endure. For you with so much teaching experience I can see how competing this would have been so frustrating!

I got bamboozled by this title! - I'll never understand the writing style of "the story doesn't matter... so here's a ton of story" - Man, if you go rogue-like you really gotta get that gameplay down. And okayish RPGMaker combat isn't enough Tevi - Why does a rabbit need special shoes to jump higher? 🤔 - Why doesn't she have thick rabbit legs? She's even showing them off with this bizarre swimwear but they're so thin - No anger for furries this time, eh? IMO kemonomimi is just furries for COWARDS 😾

    Oh, whoops I never got around to commenting! Well, here I am! Mimic Logic: the positive reviews definitely make me think my next project might be a rogue-like to jump on this gravy train cuz this is just sooo basic. Dev harassment: people are crazy! This is why I always say me and Tony are going easy on dev's compared to the psychos out there. Wildsilver: some nice effort but c'mon... hold spacebar for combat? Please dev's, put more effort into gameplay and scale back other stuff if you have to!

      Everyone was lucky they didn't get to see the forced stealth section in Wildsilver. I quit literally the screen before it. Played a bit more off stream so I could write a review for the dev.

    What is that thumbnail? Is there just sexy art of the girls for promo reasons? Or does this game have like zero interest in sticking to a time period? 🙃 This is definitely a fun format for ME, but this is very hypocritical to say because I refuse to give up the time to play through these games and heavily edit the recording like this, heh. Another game where it reaches a point where I'm asking basic questions like, "What is the main character's motivation? What is the over-arching plot?" Do dev's think these kind of quests are interesting? "Go do this mundane thing. Oh no, you need a useless object to do the mundane thing. Oh no, the useless object must be acquired by talking to a boring person. Oh no, the boring person wants you to spend 5 minutes doing a task a child could do. Oh no... etc" Also, why can't the mayor- the person in charge of this tiny town and its tiny events- simply sign a piece of paper that says "Hey let this guy in it's okay." Is everyone in this game stupid? 😂

      I can personally forgive the surreality (or stupidity… it’s hard to tell) of some of the conversations. I enjoy the SaGa series very much, which is full of weirdos. However, SaGa often has interesting combat and leveling up choices that can be the difference between success and having to start over. That’s what is lacking the most IMHO. The choices you make have negligible impact on combat. Ryder acting like he has hypertrophic Cowper's glands that are constantly secreting I can forgive. But please make the battles meaningful.

I just bought the 200 hour bs course and the moment I got to the first assignment I was saying “This is so stupid. 🤨” You’re absolutely right with the things you said. Unfortunately, I’m sol. I just spent $384 😭 I gotta get my money’s worth. If anyone is considering buying this course, don’t.

    Boy, took me a while to find the time this week, eh? Princess Marzipan: - There's some text that says to press shift to access skills. I'm guessing that's what the MP is for, since you never used any MP. - Because of the previous thing, I would guess the reason the trivia is hard is to force you to use skills, not the weird thing you said lol - That being said, I'm gonna believe that this is some weeb college student studying programming because all the questions revolve around computer stuff, weeb stuff, and the "classics." Although there was randomly a question related to Neil Breen movies!? So probably memes, too Islands of the Caliph - Neat but too simple in too many ways. But maybe that's just the opening. I could see getting into it if there was more story. - I do like that it's middle eastern rather than the usual western medieval. When I was a kid I played a game called Jewel of Arabia that was all about Zoroastrian mythology, which I knew nothing about and that made it much more interesting to me. - I think the post-processing fake CRT or whatever is messing up your bit rate! Agh!

      On the press shift for magic thing, was it streamer brain that made me miss the tutorial on that or what it never tutorializied? as for the crt filter, I'll keep that in mind for the future and disable any games that have it.
